The Social Network, the Death of “People People”

So recently I watched the movie, “The Social Network”, and it made me think about how much social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have impacted our society, and mostly, my generation.  I thought about how many times a day I check my facebook, or tweet, and how much this has become a part of my life.  It made me wonder about all of the things that my generation may be missing because of the distraction of our social networking sites.  We’ve all heard about how we are no longer able to hold conversations interpersonally, and about the toll that it has taken on our writing, grammar, and our social skills, but what about the events, big and small, that we fail to recognize and appreciate because we are too busy tweeting, or checking our facebook wall?  Has our generation lost it’s appreciation for things like the changing of the seasons, and the power that nature can have over a person’s feelings, or the feeling of a heart to heart conversation with their friend?  I believe this is true, so often people my age choose staying inside instead of spending a beautiful day outside, or sending a text message instead of going to see a person face to face to communicate an important message.  In closing, I feel that my generation is being desensitized to interpersonal interactions, whether that is between people, or between a person and the world around them.
